The Cave Gym is in the works . . .
Please be patient!
We've experienced a considerable setback in the form of an automobile accident. Things are on the mend, but it's putting us back about three months.

For now, read selections from
Homer and Epicurus.
Return winter 2023
for when the Cave Gym opens with a wide-ranging Reading Room full of ancient Greek literature
and a well-equipped head and heart Workout Room
for practice and exercise.
A few words about reading & working out the soul—the mind and heart
Listen to the Stoic Epictetus speak with a student about the ultimate point of reading and study:
"Suppose, for example, that in talking to a boxer, I said, 'Show me the muscles of your arms and shoulders,' and in reply, he said, 'Look at my weights.' 'No,' I would say, 'I want to see the effects of the weights.' So when you say, 'I've read this work and mastered it,' my response is, 'Slavish fellow! I'm not asking about this work, but how it is that you exercise the powers of choice and refusal, desire and aversion. Do you do so in accord with nature or not? If so, then give me evidence of it and I will declare that you are making progress.'"
And hear Epicurus on the need to study (philosophy and other educational material) and why we should study:
"Let no one put off studying philosophy when he is young, nor become weary of it when he is old, for no age is too early or too late for the health of the soul. To suggest that the time for studying philosophy has not yet come or that it is long gone is like saying it is too early or too late for happiness. . . . We must not merely pretend to practice philosophy; rather, we must actually do it. For we do not merely need the appearance of health, but true health."
