The following 15 readings, the 15 parts of Hesiod's Theogony (as presented in the Cave's The Best of Hesiod's Theogony & Works and Days), present the best of Homer's Theogony in two forms. First, there is the best of the poem, about three-quarters, translated straight from Hesiod (displayed in Roman type). The rest of the poem, which appears in italics, is presented in narrative summary form.

If you read the Theogony this way, you'll get the best of the poem without missing out on anything essential. Enjoy!

Note: Numbers in brackets amid the text of the poem let you know where you are in the poem. For example, [10] indicates line 10 and the nine lines that come after line 10. Numbers before narrative summaries refer to the numbers of the poem. Lowercase Roman numbers in brackets (for example, i or iii) point to explanatory notes toward the bottom.

We are in the process of posting all 15 readings.

For now, enjoy readings 1-3.
